Skill development.

It is very easy when developing the crew's abilities to focus on technical aspects. What we need to do in most cases is to develop their skill or 'feel' for the task.

The best way to help someone develop skill is to set goal related tasks not technical ones.

Examples of goal related tasks are:

Stop the boat relative to the land (use a transit on the beam of the boat).

Then do so in a variety of tide and wind conditions.

Stop the boat on a specific transit.

This can be related to trying to tell someone else how to stop a car at a set of traffic lights. It is nearly impossible to explain how hard to press on the brake peddle. When the attention if focused by being given a specific point to stop on, most people will very quickly learn how hard to press on the brakes!
