Man over board drill.

If your man over board drill under sail includes lowering the headsail, one of the challenges is how to prevent it from by it being raised by the wind force on the halyard. If you have lots of spare crew, the sail can be securely stowed.

If you are short handed, speed may be important, and if you can get the sail quickly stowed in a way that will prevent it getting out of control, you can then use that person for a more important task.

A simple solution is to have a halyard that is long enough to allow the sail to be lowered, then for the halyard to be cleated down to one of the mooring cleats on the foredeck. This will prevent the head of the sail from rising up the forestay, the main body of the sail can then be secured in seconds with one sail tie if required.
