Roller furling genoas.

Most yachts now have roller furling genoas.

In virtually every case when the sail is raised the halyard is winched tight, then the halyard is left on the winch and cleated off. This cleat is then not available to any other use (such as a spinnaker).

It is normally possible to fit a clutch type jam cleat on the halyard. This allows the winch to be left free for use with other halyards.
