Action in reducing depths.
When in close proximity to the land a regular watch should be made of the echosounder, perhaps by using the shallow alarm function.
The skipper should always have a minimum depth that they are prepared to enter in mind.
There are a series of actions that should be automatic if the depth falls below this minimum.
- Slow down.
- Turn towards where deep water should be.
- If necessary stop.
- Reverse course (there must be enough water where the vessel has come from).
