Action in reducing depths.

When in close proximity to the land a regular watch should be made of the echosounder, perhaps by using the shallow alarm function.

The skipper should always have a minimum depth that they are prepared to enter in mind.

There are a series of actions that should be automatic if the depth falls below this minimum.

  1. Slow down.
  2. Turn towards where deep water should be.
  3. If necessary stop.
  4. Reverse course (there must be enough water where the vessel has come from).
