Free phone calls

Keeping in touch when you are away sailing can be very expensive and inconvenient. Mobile phone rates can be prohibitive, I recently met a sailor who had run up a £1,500 phone bill in two months sailing round the Caribbean. Using land lines either means carrying large amounts of local currency or finding shops that sell local phone cards.

One approach that many yachtsmen are trying is the Skype internet telephone service. They offer a free phone service from computer to computer and a low rate service to landlines.

All that is required is to download their free software and to fit some appropriate type of handset such as the Cyberphone

This approach can go a long way towards improving your ease of communication with friends and family members. Of course it also works from boat to boat when you have an internet connection!

Visit the Skype website for full details.
